Markers show the two top-ranking colours for each team in the NBA, NFL, CFL, MLB and NHL
With 80% of primary colours and 56.67% of secondary colours in the MLB being either red or blue, baseball does not seem willing to go too far out in left field when it comes to colour choice. But the Miami Marlins are stepping up to the plate, with a whopping 5 colours to their uniform, making them the most colourful team across all major leagues!
Touchdown! While blue is clearly quarterbacking the spectrum, football still takes the prize for most colourful sport on the continent. Football colours also like to huddle up, with secondary colours being equal contributors to the gameplay.
Blue and red are ready to drop the gloves as they face-off for the title of most popular colour in the NHL! Sadly, purple didn't make the cut this season for either primary or secondary colours. In fact, purple has never taken the ice, with historic teams even more firmly entrenched in traditional colours than today's teams.
While secondary colours are stuck on the sidelines in some sports, they're real team players on the basketball court. Blue makes the slam dunk, but is assisted by a full-court press of all-star hues!
Shown on the map are the top two official colours for each team in the NHL, MLB, NBA, NFL and CFL as of 2015. Statistics for colours were analysed from the hue only in an HSL colour model. To create the charts above, breakpoints for discrete colours were identified on the hue spectrum in order to separate values into six colour groups. The seventh group contains achromatic values of black, white or grey.
