In this class, you will do the following: • Select an image from a provide set and trace the image onto a wood block • Carve the image into the block • Mix coloured ink • Print the block by hand on a few types of paper. • Clean up the printing area Expectations: This class is intended as a quick introduction to the woodcut printmaking process. The goal of this class is not to make a masterpiece, but rather to gain familiarity with the tools and get a sense of what is possible within this medium. With only four hours, you may not be able to finish carving your image before we have to move to printing. That being said, my students have been pleased with the art they have created. You can see examples of their work below. If you are intent creating a polished artwork of your own design, please see my other workshop, Woodcut printmaking I & II. Notes: • The price includes all materials, and a $25 non-refundable deposit. • This workshop is only available for adults (18+). • No prior experience is necessary. • You do not need to know how to draw: images will be provided for you to carve. • I take only four students at a time so you will have plenty of one-on-one instruction. • I also complete much of the preparatory work so you can focus on learning the important skills of the medium. • We will print with oil-based inks mixed with dry pigment. We will not use any solvents. (Clean up is with vegetable oil, simple green, and vinegar.) • The printing process can be messy. I recommend not wearing your favourite clothing. If you have a work apron, bring it along. • The prints will be wet, and will take several weeks to fully dry. If you wish to take them home with you immediately, you may, but most people choose to leave them with me.
